Agroventures Rotorua

Tucked off Fairy Springs Road is a relatively new addition to the Agrodome – Agrodome Extreme Adventures!  Many visitors come to New Zealand specifically for the adventure tourism and to get their adrenaline pumping.  This place has the lot all in one place, I can tell you that it really hits the spot.  Bungy jumping, swings, racing, jet boating and even a simulated freefall!  I was blown away.

Although you can take one ride individually, I would recommend a combination ticket to get the full experience here – my pick being the Schwoop (swing).  The freefall is also good fun, but tricky to get the hang of – if you are really keen it is worth paying for the extended time.

River Rats Rotorua, Rangataiki River

The team will pick you up from MALFROY Rotorua accommodation.  The Rangataiki river is a good medium length trip that takes about 3-4 hours with a good range of different rapids along the way.  This trip gives you the chance to get a bit of exercise, so quite a bit of paddling is required (in a good way).

There’s a decent drive to get to the river (over half an hour), quite scenic – and the guides will point out some of the interesting historical spots along the way.  A fun and friendly trip down a classic NZ river – has a bit of everything that makes rafting so worth while.   Highly recommended.

This video just shows one of the amazing river adventures in Rotorua!

Kaitiaki Adventures - Kaituna river

Kaitiaki Adventures Rotorua

The team will pick you up from MALFROY accommodation.  This rafting outfit takes its name seriously being conscientious and respectful of the historical as well as current life of the river.  Kaitiaki Adventures have the highest levels of service in the industry and ensure that you have as fun, safe and educational a time as possible – with no existing experience necessary.

The Kaituna trip itself takes about three quarters of an hour with not much stress on the arms in the way of paddling (not to say you don’t need to dig in at times).  This is an amazing river and is the penultimate high energy ride.  With the largest raftable waterfall in the southern hemisphere to finish it off – this is a trip you will not forget.

Kaitiaki tours is situated next to Hells Gate, approximately 20 minutes from town.  The river is approximately 10 minutes bus ride from there.  The facilities are all environmentally friendly, from the toilets to the water collection system – so if you are worried about your environmental foot-print – it will probably have shrunk by the end of this trip.  On our trip the entire raft with six adults on board completely submerged and popped back up with all on board.  It is at this stage that you are thankful for the Karakias (prayers) said on the trip - especially once you learn the historical nature of this section of the river.

Overall a well run and enjoyable trip that leaves you tingling with excitement and wellbeing.  Excellent! The photographs of your trip down the river will really impress your friends (well worth while).

Blue Baths Rotorua

Dinner / Cabaret / Dancing

Situated in the Historical Government Gardens in front of the Museum grounds, the show kicks off at 6pm with a dramatic and surprisingly powerful operatic opener – that can be viewed by anyone who happened to be in the area at the time as it is on the outside steps of the baths.
.
This show includes a five star three course meal (amazing steak) and an interactive trip (dip?) back in time where feather boas and Trilby hats reigned supreme.  You can’t help but be impressed by the quality of the singing and the Kiwiana interpretation of age old classics.  Experience NZ hospitality the way it used to be, glam yourself up and be prepared to laugh the night away in a truly Historical setting.  This is and experience that is truly unique to Rotovegas, and a truly lovely (romantic?) night out for the ladies.
View one of the shows last summer:

Paradise Valley Rotorua

If you feel like getting in touch with nature then this is the trip for you!  Off Fairy Springs Road and up into the valleys, this is a reasonably priced way to spend the day and brings you into contact with both local and introduced species – including Lions, Rainbow Trout and the mischievous Kea.  There are trout a plenty and I recommend buying some animal food, especially if you have children.  A tip for seeing the Lion pride is that they become more active during cold weather – so not a bad option if it’s a bit cold for other outdoor activities (also they are fed at 2:30 daily).

Museum Rotorua

Not the museum trip you may expect.  The Museum building is a tribute unto itself in many ways and well worth while having a look through.  It is worth choosing a fine day to be able to take advantage of the viewing platforms on top of the building.

From its heyday as an experimental spa treatments centre, the museum was saved from dilapidation when it became an underground venue for gigs in the 60’s.  There are a range of installations to experience, and a movie theatre that gives a very modern re-enactment of the history of the Rotorua region – with no less a person that Temuera Morrison (Shortland Street, Once Were Warriors & Star Wars) guiding you through.

Also well worth a mention is the Arts gallery, it has a range of interesting contemporary and more classics art forms.  There are guides available for each of the sections of the museum and you have the option of absorbing it all in your own way, or gaining the additional value of local knowledge by taking a guided tour.

Skyline Gondola, Luge Rotorua

The Luge is traditionally the ‘must do’ activity in Rotorua.  Spectacular views of the city also result in a unique way to utilise gravity in an environmentally friendly fashion – roll.  Skyline have created a patented go-cart (non-motorised) and some really well designed luge tracks.  You don’t need a motor to go fast or to have a race, and you will enjoy the ride.  Skyline also have a top level restaurant, along with  a new swing based ride that seems to get the punters screaming if a bit of freefall is more your thing.
